MXL V63m Mods

Another decent modding platform is the MXL v63m LDC mic. This mic uses a Schoeps type transformerless circuit, which, again, can be improved fairly easily with two mods. The first involves replacing all of the cheap capacitors in the signal path with higher quality caps, and the second involves opening up the headbasket grill.

As mentioned in the V67g section, for even better results, the K-67 style Chinese capsule can be replaced with a better capsule, preferably with one wtih a flatter response. The K-67 style capsule has a peak in the response curve up around 8k, which gives it a somewhat brittle sound. The original Nueman U-67 mic had some EQ circuitry to smooth this peak out, which had the effect of noise reduction in the upper frequences, while the MXL 67G (and many other Chinese clone mics) do not have this EQ circuitry, so they can sound a bit bright and brittle.

We had two V67g mics modded by someone else (Michael Joly), and these have some K-47 sytle capsules that sound great. We have used some K-47, K-12 and K-7 style capsules (from microphone-parts.com) on some other mods we have done ourself on other mics, and we are quite happy with them as well.
