Lap Steel Guitar - Home
Here is another project we had been wanting to do for some time as well - to build a lap steel guitar from scratch. We started playing electric guitars back in the early 60's during high school (see a short history of our high school band here). Back then we built our first electric guitar out of 3 layers of plywood, and an old classical guitar neck we found at the dump. We used a small table radio speaker inside the body as a pickup - basically operated as a dynamic microphone. More recently, we built up a Strat clone (look here) using parts from various sources, including many from eBay, but we were ready to try building something pretty much from scratch. We weren't, however, ready to tackle making a regular fretted neck from scratch, so, a lap steel seemed like it might be a fun project.
So, again, we really didn't NEED another guitar, but this was a different kind, and besides, we wanted to build one for our daughter as well as one for myself. So we built two of them...
